When I was a child, I enjoyed spending time with my mom while helping with laundry. We’d stand in the cold basement sorting through laundry, chatting about our days and sharing laughs. My favourite “laundry room humour” was the way she tucked socks into the ankles of my dad’s long underwear and then made them “walk and dance” around the laundry room. Well, maybe you had to be there to see the humour in it but trust me – it was hilarious! Along with the giggles and the walking underwear were some great stain removal tips that I still use today. Years before we had our son, I thought my husband was the messiest eater I had ever met. He seriously couldn’t get through a meal without part of it staining his clothes. He also has a terrible habit of wearing clothes down until they rip out in public (always in the worst possible spot) but that’s a story for another day. Let’s just say that his messy eating habits game me plenty of practice in the stain removal department.
Then we had a baby – a beautiful baby boy. So delicate, so tiny, so sweet, so messy. I’d have to say that the worst stains I’ve had to deal with were the diaper blowouts. New mom’s all know the sound – that rumbling explosion that you just know is already covering your little one from neck to toes. Oh boy – I don’t miss those messes!
Two of my best stain removal tips are:
1) Treat messes as soon as they happen. The longer they sit untreated, the more difficult it is to remove the stain.
2) Mix a little bit of dry stain removal detergent with a little bit of wet detergent until you reach the consistency of toothpaste. Use an old toothbrush and scrub the mixture into the stain well before putting it into the wash.
