This article on Hawks Cay Resort is courtesy of our contributor Mary of Calculated Traveller…Located in Duck Key, Florida, between Miami and Key West, Hawks Cay Resort is full of family-friendly fun. With six swimming areas, you don’t have to go far to enjoy the water.
The Saltwater Lagoon, in particular, is unique and found exclusively at Hawks Cay Resort. The ocean tides feed this enclosed lagoon, and the water level rises/lowers as the day progresses. It’s human-made but entirely natural looking with a sandy beach, palms, and tropical fish. It makes the perfect backdrop should you wish to try your hand at standup paddle boarding or lazily lounge the day away in the sun.
Speaking of exclusive — right next to the Saltwater Lagoon, is the Dolphin Connection, an amazing dolphin experience program where you get to spend time with these majestic creatures of the sea. It’s an extra fee should you wish to join the program but it’s free to watch the dolphins swim from the viewing platform.
Bikes, Pirates and Iguanas
If you are looking for a day with a bit more activity, head over to the Coral Cay Activities & Adventures building for bike rentals, mini golf, sports field, and playground as well as an indoor crafts area.
We were surprised with a visitor during our mini golf game when an iguana strolled by the 12th hole!
Another key feature of this part of the resort is the Pirate Ship Pool complete with water slides, cannons, and splash pad as well as another family friendly swimming pool — the Coral Cay.
Family-Friendly Accommodation Choices
Choices being the optimum word here because Hawks Cay Resort has multiple accommodation styles to suit everyone making the resort an excellent location for multi-generational family reunions!
Multi-level villas with full kitchen, laundry facilities, living room and multiple bedrooms and bathrooms that sleep 4+.
16 Family suites with bunk beds for the kids include privacy curtains and separate TVs.
Traditional hotel suites.
Luxury condo style suites complete with private decks. The Presidential suite I toured had 960 square feet of living space.
Hey don’t worry if family members are staying in different parts of the 60-acre resort — there is free tram service throughout the compound.
Everything and S’mores
There is plenty to keep the entire family entertained at Hawks Cay Resort. Activity schedules are on display on the electronic message board in the lobby and there is a mix of things suitable for all ages. The weekend we were at the resort, the agenda included fitness classes, tennis clinics, touch tank demos, nature crafts, and card games during the day and live entertainment at night by the pool. Not to be missed are s’mores by the bonfire!
