Do you have a little cowboy or cowgirl with a birthday coming up? One of the coolest birthday parties for kids is a cowboy theme because there are so many fun activities you can play. Here you’ll find ideas for invitations, decor, food, games and loot bags that your little cowboy and cowgirl party guests are sure to enjoy.
Invitations
A fun invitation idea you can create on your own is a “Wanted” invitation. MS Word clipart has “wanted” clipart you can use for free. You can include wording such as “You Are Wanted For A Birthday Party Round-Up for {Child’s Name}”.
Party Decorations
You’ll want to include items such as cowboy hats for the guests and western bandanas. For this party, I styled the eating area with cowboy and cowgirl party hats, bandanas, mason jar drinks with burlap ribbons and sheriff badges, plus a mixture of cow print and bandana print supplies like paper plates and napkins. I also used mini squares of hay and added some fresh flowers to the table. The hats, bandanas and sheriff badges could double as party favors for the guests. For a special treat, I used chocolate milk straws in the mason jar drinks.
For the main food table, I started with a large Wild Wild West banner then used wooden boxes, hay and a denim tablecloth to help set the scene.
Other fun & easy ways to decorate your party include a sign for “Pony Parking” (you could have some stick horses here for the kids to play with) and an “Outhouse” sign on the bathroom door.
Party Food
A BBQ is a great idea for a cowboy and cowgirl party. You could serve items such as burgers & baked beans. Remember to have a buffet of burger toppings available so the guests can customize their burger to their taste.
For this party I served “Golden Nuggets” (chicken nuggets), coleslaw and cornbread muffins.
Sweet Treats
A cowboy and cowgirl party wouldn’t be complete without delicious treats! For this party I served “Cow Pies” (chocolate marshmallow cookies), and “Haystacks” (crispy marshmallow rice treats).
Cowboy and Cowgirl Party Games
There are so many fun ideas for a cowboy or cowgirl themed birthday party!
Cow Ropin’: For this game you’ll need a large stuffed cow (or other western themed animal) and a hula hoop. Set a line where guests must stand and then each guest gets a turn tossing the hula hoop and trying to “lasso” the animal.
Horseshoe Toss: Guests can compete in a horseshoe throwing contest.
Panning For Gold Nuggets: Paint some small rocks with gold paint and then hide them in a sandbox. Guests must use shovels, sand sifters and pails to pan for gold nuggets. The person with the most gold nuggets can win a prize.
Shootin’ Saloon: Guests can take turns using a Nerf gun to knock down items such as empty cans or plastic bottles in your “shootin’ saloon”.
For a fun photo area, use a ride-on toy horse with farm animal balloons and a “wooden” backdrop. I used a wood print tablecloth for the background here.
Party Favors
For this party, I set up a “Happy Trails To You” favor area like a candy buffet but with items for a trail mix like pretzels, popcorn and candy. Guests could then fill their own to-go containers to take home.
Other fun ideas for loot bags for a cowboy and cowgirl party are:
- sheriff badges
- cowboy hats
- small water pistols
