Flowerpot Party Activity & Favor

This Flowerpot Party Activity post is courtesy of our contributor Chantelle of Dolled Up Design…The cost of parties can add up very quickly, so I have taken to planning party activities that serve double duty as both entertainment during the party and a fun favor to bring home. For my daughter’s 3rd Princess Garden Party last year, I knew decorating flower pots and planting flowers would be the perfect activity and favor for her young guests. I set up three stations set up in our yard for the guests to decorate pots and plant flowers, then everyone went away with a cute little favor at the end of the party.

I ordered and used these great pots from Open A Party. I had considered painting basic terra cotta pots, but for the young age group I was hosting I decided it was best to stick to something that didn’t involve a lot of mess. You could certainly go that route if you are comfortable with it.

The garden themed paper inserts the pots came with to color were cute, but I ended up tracing out the template and designing custom princess inserts to fit the party theme. For the boys, I also drew up a super hero option. These were printed out and pre-cut so they were ready for the kids to color.

After coloring the inserts, the next station was where the guests got to choose their pot. The colored paper inserts slid easily inside the plastic pots and there were foam sticker shapes for the kids to decorate the outside of the pots with. I also had plastic garden markers to write their names on so everyone could keep track of their potted plant to bring home at the end of the party.

The final step was planting a flower in the decorated flower pots. The party was in May so it was easy to pick out a selection of inexpensive bedding flowers from the garden section at Walmart. They were presented in our emptied sandbox with some fresh dirt, small trowels for planting and a watering can.

All the kids seemed excited to color and decorate their pots and equally excited to dig into the dirt to plant their flowers. It was a fairly simple activity, but it worked well to keep everyone entertained and busy during the party.

These decorated flower pots would be a great activity at any summer party. The idea could easily translate to a wide range of themes such as a tea party, fairy party, rainbow party, art party or bug theme party. It is a fairly cheap and easy activity to put together and money well spent for a fun project and lasting momento of your party.
