The year-long Moments of Joy campaign is almost here and I can’t wait to see what all of you have to share! This will be a place where you can upload photos and captions to share all of your OVER-moments with other parents. You can tell us about that first OVERjoyed moment when you first found out you were pregnant. Were your OVERwhlemed when you first brought your baby home? During the first few months, did you always seem to be OVERtired? This community will be a fun place to share all the joys of parenthood along with support for some of the overwhelming times.

Last month I shared with you the story of my son’s OVERwhelming birth along with the OVERjoyed feelings I had when I first laid eyes on my beautiful little boy. This month I’d like to share another OVERwhelming story with you that I’m sure many of you can relate to – discovering a food allergy.

Neither my husband or I (or anyone in our immediate family) has a food allergy so you can imagine our surprise when our son started showing signs of an allergic reaction at just 12 months old. I had read that it was okay to start introducing nut products into a child’s diet at 12 months old so I had started to give my son a small amount of peanut butter on his toast each day. On the fourth day of this, his eyes started to get red and swell up. His poor little face was starting to get covered in red bumps and I started to panic. Was he really having an allergic reaction to food or was it the chlorine bothering him since we had just gotten back from a swimming lesson?

His breathing didn’t seem to be affected but his little body did seem worn out and he looked like he was falling asleep. I immediately called the health line and the nurse suggested that I take him to a walk-in clinic immediately but by this time my husband was already driving us to the hospital. When we arrived, the doctor advised that it did look like a food allergy and that we would need to take him to see an allergy specialist. Unfortunately, there is a nine month wait for an appointment.

For the next nine months, we avoided all products with peanuts or other tree nuts. When his appointment finally arrived, the doctor confirmed what we were wishing wasn’t true – our little boy is allergic to peanuts. He will continue to get tested annually and the doctor said this may be something he outgrows. For now, we’re are being extremely cautious with the food we give him, items ordered at a restaurant, food set out at a party at a friend’s home, etc. We carry 2 EpiPens everywhere we go and we have plans in place for what to do if he has another allergic reaction. Does your child have any food allergies? How did you find out about it?
