Witch Hat Cookies – Supplies:

  • Favorite roll out cookie recipe
  • Witch hat cookie cutter
  • Black 20 second icing
  • Lime green 20 second icing
  • Orange stiff consistency icing
  • Purple stiff consistency icing
  • Americolor white gel food coloring
  • Fine tip paintbrush
  • Optional – Gold luster dust and soft round paintbrush

Mix, roll, cut and bake up your dough. I flavored mine with Lorann’s coffee emulsion which also gave the dough a warm autumn color- double win!

Using your black icing, outline and fill in the top and bottom sections of your witch hat leaving a slightly curved band in the center.

Once this icing is dry, fill in the center band with lime green icing.

I came across these ADORABLE hair clips by Beck and Belle on Etsy (visit her shop here) and wanted to give my cookies a similar feel with the floral accents. There is definitely a learning curve to piping royal icing roses, but you can get a floral feel just by using a star tip.

Start with your tip just barely touching the surface and pipe a counter clockwise swirl using consistent pressure. Once you have piped all the way around, release pressure on pull away in the same counterclockwise direction. You’ll want the tail of your icing to blend in to the beginning of your rosette swirl. Practice a few times on a paper towel until you are comfortable piping in a small circular motion.

Once you have the motion down, pipe a few rosettes in each color along the green band. You can make as many or as few rosettes as you like!

I varied the placement and color pattern of my rosettes.

Next, paint on a few random spiderweb patches using undiluted white gel food color and a fine tip paintbrush. Choose a starting point and paint a few white lines radiating outward. Add some curved and horizontal lines in random patterns between the longer lines, until you achieve your desired look.

I wanted to add a little extra witchcraft to my cookies, so I brushed them with an edible gold luster dust once everything was dry. This step is totally optional but adds an even more spooky flair!
