Today on Party Tip Tuesday we’re featuring the creative Kara of Lillan Hope Designs. Her parties are so bright, vibrant and creative! She has so many great ideas for creating your own party decor and I can’t wait to get to the craft store to get started on my own mini cupcake stands and cake pedestals! Today she’s here to share creative decorating tips with us so let’s jump right into it!
1) What is Lillian Hope Designs?

2) What is one of your favorite ways to take an ordinary party supply and turn it into something extraordinary?
I love making something unique out of an ordinary party supply! I also love making it an affordable option for my customers to be able to duplicate!
A common everyday object that I use in almost every party I style is fabric! I am constantly asked where I got a certain tablecloth or backdrop and how I made it. Once I have my invitation for the party I take it to the fabric store with me to get inspired! Once I have the fabric I am going to use, the entire party is based around that piece of fabric. You do not need to know how to sew in order to make a backdrop or tablecloth from fabric – you simply need to know how to cut! I cut the length I need and either drape it over the table or glue dot it to the wall or foam board I am using for the backdrop. It is as simple as that!
Tissue Pom Poms are a fabulous party supply that can turn an ordinary set up into extraordinary! They are REALLY easy to make and can be hung from the ceiling, table, chandelier, or made small and used for garland or cupcake toppers! Here is an easy to follow tutorial on How To Make Tissue Pom Poms. I used tissue poms to adorn the sides of my Little Man Mustache Bash table, and to make an adorable statement chandelier in the Look Whoo’s One Owl Party.
3) Can you share a few tips for adding bold splashes of color into a party?
Colors can make-or-break a party set up! Everyone loves splashes of bold colors at a festive event. For me the most important part is making sure the colors coordinate well together and do not clash! The next important tip is to make sure the different shades go well together. For example, if you are doing a party full of color, like the Look Whoo’s One Party, you want to make sure you don’t have 8 different shades of each color you are using! My one suggestion here is….DON’T be afraid to use color and lots of it! So many people think they have to pick two colors and that’s all they can use. You can use as many colors as you want. Just be sure to follow the tips I listed above!
4) Can you share a few tips for creative ways to add height to a party’s food table?
Having height on your Dessert/Food table set up is very important! When everything is on the same level it starts to blend together. Adding as many varying heights as you can creates an easy on the eye dessert table! On the table, I love to use photo storage boxes under plates and stands, as seen in my Pirate Party and Christmas Party. Or I like using varying height display stands (such as cake and cupcake stands) as seen in my You Are My Sunshine Baby Shower.
Balloons on the side of a table and a poster or banner on the backdrop also give great height and contrast to the eye. You can get creative with height as I did in my daughter’s Secret Garden Party….I used a tree branch on one side of the table to help draw the eye upward! Your imagination is the limit!
5) Where is your favorite place to look for party planning inspiration?
I have a few favorites! If I had to pick just one it would be Pinterest! My favorite party blogs are Kara’s Party Ideas and Hostess With The Mostess! I love both of those ladies and what they have done!
