If you Google “Survivorman”, you won’t see my picture in the search results. No food, no shelter, no fresh water…no thanks. Although I wouldn’t classify myself as an adventure seeker, when an opportunity came up to kayak with alligators I knew I had to try it. Having never kayaked before in my life, kayaking with alligators in Florida seemed like a good place to start…right?
Kayaking with Alligators – Tips:
My paddling adventure at The Paddling Center at Shingle Creek was a huge success! It was so peaceful and it’s something I would try again. I’m far from a paddling expert but you don’t need expert skills to have fun on this adventure. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your paddling experience.
Tip One: Choose the right partner. I wasn’t scared of what we may find in the water but I was scared about tipping the kayak or not being able to navigate my way through the creek. You can rent a single or a tandem kayak. If you’re still learning, choose the tandem and a partner with some experience. I had a great partner who helped me navigate through the creek when it got narrow. She was also on her own when I wanted to stop to take pictures.
Tip Two: Bring your camera. I wasn’t going to bring my camera or phone with me because I was worried that they’d get wet but the Paddling Centre has dry bags or dry boxes that you can use to store your personal items in while you are paddling. There are going to be some great photo opportunities that you don’t want to miss.
Tip Three: Be prepared for an adventure. Dress in clothes that will dry quickly in case you get splashed. You’ll also get warm out there so bring clothes that will help keep you cool. You’ll want comfortable shoes (like runners), sunblock, a hat and sunglasses. The Paddling Centre will have PFD (personal flotation devices) that you must wear while out on the creek.
Tip Four: Enjoy the scenery. Take your time – it isn’t a race – and watch for turtles, birds and even alligators! While we were paddling, I accidentally hit something under the water. It was likely a log but it sounds so much cooler to say that I found an alligator. {wink} Keep your eyes & ears open because you never know what you’ll find!
