I wanted to really think outside the box with my turkey design, since I’ve already seen almost every cookie cutter under the sun used in a clever way. I decide to use this adorable chubby heart cutter from SweetLeigh Printed. After a few quick trial sketches, the design just jumped out at me!

Cute Turkey Cookie Tutorial:

You’ll need a few different colors of icing for these cookies, but the options are endless. Here’s what I decided to use:

Body & Face

  • Americolor Chocolate Brown (20 sec)
  • Americolor Yellow (piping)
  • Americolor Red (piping)

Feathers (I recommend at least 4 colors)

  • Wilton Copper (20 sec)
  • Wilton Juniper Green (20 sec)
  • Americolor Gold (20 sec)
  • Americolor Maroon (20 sec)
  • White (10 sec)

We’ll begin by adding the turkey’s body. Start back a little less than half inch from the point and outline a gourd shape using the chocolate brown icing.

Fill in the outline and drop in a black non-pareil for the eye while the icing is still wet Allow this section to dry at least 30 min.

The beauty of this design, is that you can bake a batch of chubby hearts and decorate them in two different ways – make the turkeys all facing one direction or just flip some of the cookies around and have your turkeys gaze at each other.

Next, add the beak using piping consistency yellow icing. Use a leaf tip, or if you prefer tipless bags like I do, you can quickly cut a leaf tip right into the bag just by snipping upward in a v shape.

Position your bag so the pointed tip is touching the cookie right where the brown body ends. Apply pressure until the beak is as wide as you like and then release pressure and pull your bag towards the point of the heart. My icing was a little looser than I wanted, so I just added a little definition line in the center of the beak with my scribe tool.

Next up…the feathers! Outline a teardrop shape on one of the hearts rounded areas.

Fill in and then go back with your white icing and pipe some horizontal lines across the feather.

While the icing is still wet, use a scribe tool or a toothpick to drag a line down the center of the feather towards the body. This marbling technique gives a nice feather effect with minimal effort. I varied the marbling on my feathers – some had three lines dragged towards the body, others had one center line going towards the body and then a line on either side pulling away from the body.

Allow each color feather to dry at least 15 min before adding the neighboring feathers. This allows each feather to maintain a distinct separation instead of just all running together.

Next, pipe on the turkey’s snood using your red icing.

Once your four feathers are all piped on and dry, add the turkey wing. Using the same brown icing, outline a smaller teardrop shape in the center of the body. Immediately fill in and then pipe two horizontal lines in the color of your choice. I went with orange, but you could also try white to match the feathers, or even a lighter brown. Using the same marbling technique drag three vertical lines upward using your scribe or toothpick.

I wanted a little extra color so I filled in the areas between my four feathers using the leftover icing. Now my turkey looks cute enough to gobble right up!!
