We love bedtime. It’s our time to unwind from a busy day, collect some last minute snuggles and enjoy some quiet time around the house. My son has had a bedtime routine since the day we brought him home from the hospital. He thrives on routine – just like his mama – so we stick to the same routine every night even if we’re on a vacation.
Our Bedtime Routine:
Since my husband works outside the home, he doesn’t get a lot of quality time with our son during the week. This is why bath time is their special time together. They play with bath toys, giggle about spilling water on the floor and start to wind down for the day.
After bath time, it’s straight into pajamas and then into bed with a sippy cup of milk. The three of us sit in bed together and read a book or play a silly game for a few minutes. Then it’s time to close our eyes for bed. Either my husband or I (or both of us) lays down with him as he falls asleep. Instead of having a comfort blanket or stuffed animal, our son loves to play with hair. Sure, a lot of my hair gets pulled out in the process but he enjoys it and it brings him comfort so I’m okay with all my broken hair strands.
I used to sing him songs before bed but now he covers my mouth with his hand…I can take the hint.
Since my son was born (almost 2.5 years ago), I think we’ve only ever missed our nightly bath time once. The bath is his signal that bedtime is on the way. He knows his routine without us having to tell him the next steps each night.
