One of my biggest fears in life is scuba diving. The thought of being underwater with all that equipment is terrifying to me. It’s a shame really because I’m missing out on all the excitement under the sea! About 10 years ago, I was on vacation in Thailand with one of my best friends. She wanted to go on a snorkeling adventure and I reluctantly agreed to go with her. I was actually enjoying being out there floating with my snorkel mask and flippers while watching all the fish below…then she started to throw food at me from the boat so the fish would come closer. Aww, such great memories – not! Ha! I vowed to never to go snorkeling again…well, maybe just not with Krista. What I do think I could handle is being turned into a mermaid for the day. How awesome would that be? In the new Disney Junior Canada special The Floating Palace, Sofia The First is turned into a mermaid for the day with the help of her special amulet. In honor of Sofia’s new adventure, I’ve put together some fun mermaid party food ideas that you could enjoy during the special presentation.
Mermaid Party Food:
I started off by making some mermaid cups. These are so easy & your kids will love to help make them! Simply use metallic cupcake liners, cut them in half, then use double-sided tape to layer them on the outside of a plastic drinking cup. I used a strip of glitter tape at the top of the cup to finish them off. There you have it – shiny mermaid tail cups!
Before we dig into the sugary treats, let’s start with some sandwiches. Simply make your favourite sandwiches and cut them out with a fish-shaped cookie cutter. What to do with the leftover sandwich outside the cookie cutter shape? That’s where dad or some hungry older siblings can help!
For sweet treats, cream puffs can turn into clams with pearls simply but slicing open one half of the cream puff and placing a round yogurt covered raisin inside.
On a cake stand or dessert platter tray, sprinkle some crushed graham wafers for sand and top with gummy fish, gummy sharks and chocolates shaped like seashells.
For extra decoration around the food display, I used seashells, plastic starfish and plastic pom poms in teal and blue.
Sofia The First: The Floating Palace premieres on Disney Junior Canada on Sunday, December 8th at 5pm ET. Did you know that Ariel makes a special appearance in this special? In celebration of this, Disney Junior Canada will be airing The Little Mermaid 2 on Friday, January 3rd at 10AM ET. Be sure to set your PVR as I’m sure your little ones will want to watch these specials over and over again!
