This I Chews You Valentine Cookie Tutorial is courtesy of our contributor Amy of BZ Bees Sweet Treats...I recently saw this ADORABLE Gumball Valentine project shared on the Moms & Munchkins FB page and immediately wanted to make a cookie version for my next tutorial. I mean, c’mon… there is nothing more fun than combining cookies AND candy with an adorable Valentine’s Day pun – “I Chews You”. Seriously cute!
I made a pink version for this post, but you can change the cookie colors to fit almost any holiday – green for St. Patrick’s Day, Black & Orange for Halloween…the possibilities are endless.
Keep reading for the full written instructions as well as a short video below on how to make these great Valentine’s Day cookies.
I Chews You Cookies – Here’s What You’ll Need:
- Grey piping and flood consistency icing (royal icing recipe here)
- Pink 20 second icing
- Baby blue 15 second icing
- White flood consistency icing
- Sixlet candies – you can find these at most party stores in any color of the rainbow, but I found a Valentine’s assortment at my local Dollar General
- Optional – black piping and flood consistency icing
My gumball machine cookies were actually made with a snowglobe cutter from Truly Mad Plastics (available here.)
You can also combine a few basic shaped cutters and make your own “franken-cookie” version. Klickitat Street has an excellent post on creating new shapes from cutters you already have. Check it out here.
Start by outlining the coin slot and handle area using your grey piping icing.
Fill in the sections using the grey flood consistency icing.
Next, outline the body of the machine using your pink 20 second icing, and immediately fill in.
Add the top screw to your cookie using the pink. I did this in two steps – first outline and flood the pointed oval shape, and then add a small dot once the first part has crusted over.
Using your blue icing, outline the glass portion of your cookie. Let the outline dry a few minutes before flooding. This will create a barrier so the icing doesn’t run over when you add the Sixlet candies.
Flood the glass area of the cookie with just enough icing to cover the section. You’ll be adding more icing for reflections so you don’t want to cause an overflow.
Using your white flood icing, add some reflection lines directly onto the wet blue icing.
While the blue icing is still wet, drop in the Sixlet candies. So cute, right? I haven’t tested it, but I’m sure M&Ms would be just as cute here. Some candy colors have a tendency to bleed into surrounding icing, so do a trial run before you make these for the whole kindergarten class.
Using your grey piping icing, add an extra outline around the coin slot area and add the handle and dispense area details. The cookie is super cute already, but if you want to add extra pizzazz fill in the dispensary with black flood icing and pipe on a cute saying.
Enjoy making these sweets for your sweetie. XOXO Happy Valentine’s Day!

Your cookies are beautiful! I’ve yet to master frosting cookies. Mine look like my 6 year old decorated them! Visiting from Tip Junkie link party.
Aww, this is so adorable! Love it!

I like this cutter for the gumball machine better than an actual gumball machine cutter! So cute and chunky!
