DIY Mario Mushroom Favors

I came up with these mushrooms for my son to hand out to his class at Halloween. He insisted on being Mario so it seemed fitting that he hand out treats that look like the iconic mushrooms in the game. There are plenty of fun Mario candy products that I could have bought to fit the theme, but these came out a lot cheaper and were quick to put together for his class of 17 students.

I chose to work with packaged candies because they were being sent to school, but you could easily use bulk candies. Suggestions might be red and orange jelly beans, M&M’s, ju jubes or mini marshmallows.

DIY Mario Mushroom Favors – Supplies:

I was able to find all my supplies, including the 3 packs of small containers at my favorite Dollar Store (Dollarama).

  • Small Clear Round containers with lids
  • Cellophane
  • Red tulle, napkins, or tissue paper
  • Small treats
  • Scissors
  • Scotch tape
  • Black permanent (Sharpie) marker

To Create Your Mushroom Treats:

Begin by cutting the cellophane and tulle/napkins/tissue paper into large even sized circles. Your circles should be about 3x the diameter of the container lids you are working with to allow you lots of extra material to create a pouf on top and wrap the remaining under the lid. I used a soup bowl as my template, tracing it onto a sheet of plain printer paper and then cutting around for each material layer. Cut one layer of each per mushroom you are making.

Start assembling your mushrooms by filling the container with small treats and setting the lids to the side where they are easy to access.

Layer the cellophane on the bottom, then the tulle or napkins on top with the printed side facing downwards and put a small amount of treats in the center of the circle.

Put the layers and treats into the palm of your hand and place the lid on top.

Use a few pieces of tape to secure the layers to the underside of the lid of the treat container.

Carefully screw the lid onto the treat container, trapping the layers under the edges of the lid and creating a pouf-shaped mushroom on top.

Using your permanent marker, draw eyes on each container.

Variations: I used white polka dotted cellophane over plain red tulle, but there are a variety of ways to get the red spotted look for the mushroom tops; red and white polka dotted napkins with clear cellophane over the top would be a good option, as would red or green tissue paper with clear cellophane and round white polka dot stickers on top (reinforcements would work great for this!).

I will be honest in that these were slightly cumbersome to try and put together alone, but it got easier the more I made. I wouldn’t have wanted much bigger of a lid to fit into the palm of my hand, and my biggest help was taping the material edges down to the lid when trying to fit everything together.
