It’s never too early to start teaching your children about giving back to others and I have a really fun way for you to get started – Treats For Toys! The Rice Krispies Treats For Toys program is something you can do together as a family. Have you ever been told not to play with your food? You can ignore that rule for this activity! Rice Krispies wants to see what kind of cool toys you can make using Rice Krispies, candy and your imagination.
So how does playing with your food teach your kids about giving back? Simply share a photo of your creations on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #TreatsForToys and Rice Krispies will donate toys to children in need with the help of the Salvation Army. The more treats shared, the more toys donated to kids less fortunate. Simply add your creation to the Rice Krispies Treats For Toys site and it allows you to share to your social media channels from there.
Treats For Toys Creations:
Grab that leftover Halloween candy and start creating! You can view some examples on the Rice Krispies site or you can use your imagination to create toy-shaped treats.
My first toy-shaped treat was a race car. I started with all the candy pieces like the eyes and wheels and then shaped my race car. Here are a couple of tips for you:
- dip your hands in cold water so the Rice Krispie treats don’t get stuck to your hands
- put your toy-shaped treat in the fridge to cool and harden and then use a knife to carve the finer details
I wish I had a copy of my first version to show you – it was hilarious! The eyes fell off, the car had teeth that had fallen out…he was a disaster but so delicious! That’s one of the great things about this activity – you get to eat all the pieces that don’t turn out according to plan!
Here is a photo of my final race car before my husband started eating it for dessert. When it comes to sweet treats around here, I need to snap photos fast before they get eaten!
My second treat was an airplane complete with cotton ball clouds. Once my three year old saw it and shouted “PLANE”, I knew I was on the right track!
What kind of toy-shaped treats will you make? Make sure you share them on the Rice Krispies page and on your social media channels so they count towards the #TreatsForToys program. I can’t wait to see your creations!
