Although I’ve never personally met a leprechaun (apparently they are hard to catch), I’ve heard that they are fans of Lucky Charms so these Lucky Charms Marshmallow Treats seem like a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Are you building a leprechaun trap this year? These dessert squares would work great as trap bait! Now we don’t want to hurt the leprechaun so make sure your trap is leprechaun-friendly. While trapping a leprechaun would be fun the reality is that my kids love this sweet treat. Okay, I will admit it, I love the lucky charms marshmallow treats too! I mean what is not to love, it is simple to make, only takes and a few minutes and it’s a delicious treat! Plus I can indulge with a small piece or a bigger piece but either way, I can fill my sweet tooth. Let’s get to making these treats for St. Patrick’s Day.

Ingredients for Lucky Charms Marshmallow Treats:

One of the reasons that I love these Lucky Charms Marshmallow Treats is that it doesn’t take a lot to make them. The problem is usually once I make a pan the kids and myself eat them up so quickly we have to make a second pan.

  • ¼ cup unsalted or salted butter
  • 4 cups plain marshmallows
  • 5 cups Lucky Charms cereal
  • 8×8 baking pan

Before we get started, know that if you want to turn these into green treat squares for a St. Patrick’s day treat, simply add a few drops of green food coloring in with the marshmallow melted mixture before stirring in the cereal. Let’s get started on the lucky charms marshmallow treats recipe.

Spray 8x8 Pan

Spray an 8’ x 8” baking pan well with non-stick cooking spray. Don’t skip this step or you will be scraping out the stuck on lucky charms marshmallow treats.

Melting Butter

In a large microwave-safe bowl, fully melt the butter. If you haven’t melted butter before do it in 20-second intervals so it doesn’t melt then splatter in the microwave.

Butter Coating Marshmallows

Remove the melted butter from the microwave and add in marshmallows. Stir to fully coat marshmallows with butter.

Return bowl with marshmallows to the microwave and heat on high in 30-second intervals. Make sure to stir well after every 30 seconds until marshmallows have melted. For me, it took 1 minute total but each microwave is different. Make sure to stir well to mix the melted marshmallows with butter. If making this festive for St. Patrick’s day you simply add a few drops of green food coloring in with the marshmallow melted mixture and stir to the desired color.

Pour in the first cup or so of lucky charms cereal with the butter and marshmallow mixture. Make sure to add in the Luck Charms about a cup and a half at a time so it all gets coated. Stirring well with each addition.

Once you have added in all 5 cups of the lucky charms make sure it is stirred well as you want to have most of the cereal coated with the marshmallow and butter mixture.

Press firmly into greased pan. I found it easiest to grease my hands by just spraying them with the non-stick spray for this step so you don’t have a sticky mess on your hands. Place in refrigerator or on the counter for at least one or two hours before slicing and serving.

Now you just need to cut and serve the delicious Lucky Charms Marshmallow Treats. I surprised mine with this treat for St. Patricks day in there lunch bags. needless to say, they were thrilled and it didn’t cost me a pot of gold! Storing these treats on the counter or in the fridge is acceptable just make sure it is in a sealed container, luckily my baking pans come with lids to make this easy for me.

  6. Press firmly into greased pan. You may want to wet or grease your hands for this step so you don’t have a sticky mess on your hands.
  7. Place in refrigerator or on the counter covered for at least an hour or two before slicing and serving.
