This Kakamora Party Cups tutorial is courtesy of our contributor Chantelle of Dolled Up Design…It is no surprise that Moana has become a widely popular party theme since being released in theaters late last year. From the loveable characters to the tropical theming, there are so many great elements to pull from and use for a party based around the spunky island princess.
DIY Kakamora Party Cups:
If you have seen Moana, you will recognize these cute, but dangerous, little coconuts. They are key characters on Moana’s adventure, and as you can see, also make for some fun and adorable Kakamora Party Cups!
I found my coconut shaped cups at Party City. They are pretty common item that can be found in the aisles of any party store or under their Luau category online. Mine cost just $2.49 each.
To paint the Kakamora Party Cups, I used 4 different colors of acrylic paint. I began by giving each a face shape in my tan color for the background, and then began painting on the eyes, mouth and facial details in dark brown, white and red.
Everything was painted free hand with inspiration drawn from images in the movie. With so many different Kakamora aboard the boat, it was easy to mix and match details and have my cups look like they could fit right in. There is a hand drawn quality to them in the movie, so have fun with it and don’t stress about creating perfect replicates.
Once painted and dried, I do recommend sealing your finished faces with a coat of Modge Podge. This will help protect against the paint rubbing off or the liquids you are drinking soaking through and ruining your hard work.
I think my band of “murdering little pirates” turned out pretty cute. The cups were simple to make, and would be a welcome addition to any Moana themed party or movie night. For those who have always wanted to drink from a coconut, the addition of the hand painted faces just ups the fun factor!
