There are many special holidays to celebrate in January: New Year’s Day, Orthodox Christmas Day, Chinese New Year…among others. But what about the fun yet odd January National Holidays that most of us haven’t heard about like National Pie Day (Yum!)? There are so many reasons to keep the celebrations going after New Year’s Day. Here are a few of my favorites and ideas for how to celebrate with your mom & baby group.
January National Holidays:
National Pie Day, January 23rd: The American Pie Council (yes, there really is such a thing!) is dedicated to promoting American’s love of pies and that is why they’ve designated and registered January 23rd to be National Pie Day. If there are some bakers in your moms group, try celebrating by having a pie potluck. It’s a great excuse to eat a lot of pie! I bet you wish more of these January National Holidays included pie!
Belly Laugh Day, January 24th: We’re all busy moms trying our best to take care of our families, our home and ourselves. I’m sure we all have days when we’re overwhelmed and could use a good laugh. According to a recent study by the Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, laughter may help prevent heart disease. Not a comedian yourself? No problem! There are many other people out there who specialize in laughter. Look through your local directories, perhaps there is a Laughter Yoga instructor that would be willing to provide a free sample class for your moms group. I’m sure a lot of these January National Holidays will give you plenty of reasons to share laughter with your friends and family.
National Preschool Fitness Day, January 27th: I will admit, I did have a few too many holiday cookies (and fudge, pie, chocolates…you get the idea) over the holidays. I keep telling myself that I’ll start my fitness routine tomorrow. When tomorrow comes around though I’m busy with feedings, playing with my son, cleaning, cooking, and watching Elmo videos on YouTube. If you are having trouble getting back into your fitness routine as well, then mark your calendar for January 27th – National Preschool Fitness Day. Planning a fitness activity that involves your child is a great way to get back on track. Studies show that childhood obesity is now recognized as having its roots during the preschool years. Recent studies have even indicated that children as young as 9 months are already affected. There are many baby & me fitness classes offered in cities across Canada. Check out your local city’s leisure guide for an instructor that may be willing to offer a free sample class for your group.
Family Literacy Day, January 27th: Libraries across Canada will be holding special events to celebrate Family Literacy Day. Family literacy programs are usually free and open to the general public. Check with your local library to see if they have an event that your group can attend to or perhaps they’d be interested in hosting a short Mother Goose story time exclusively for your group. It’s never to early to start reading to your little ones!
