My little guy is a dancer. Anytime he hears music, he does his own little shake & dance along with the tunes. Did you know that music helps a child’s development? According to play experts at LEGO DUPLO:

I try to keep his music kid-friendly because you never know what words kids might learn from some of the music videos out there these days. Healthy Spring Giveaway

In less than a month my son will be two years old. I really don’t know how his second birthday has come up so quickly but whether I’m ready or not he’s about to celebrate another birthday. This has me thinking about this extra “baby weight” that I’m still carrying around. Yes I know that after two years I still shouldn’t be referring to it as “baby weight” but it just makes me feel better!

Before I became pregnant I exercised every single day and was so careful about what I ate. Actually, the moment I knew I was pregnant was when I got dizzy and fell over while exercising. I tried to keep up an exercise routine while pregnant but I was always so tired that I spent most of my time sleeping. When I wasn’t sleeping, I was eating! By the end of my pregnancy I had gained 45 pounds but I was sure that I’d be able to take the weight off quickly. I ended up having an emergency c-section and was ordered by my doctor to take it easy for 6 weeks. At my 6 week checkup I was ordered to take it easy for another 6 weeks. So for 12 weeks in total, I didn’t do a lot of exercise with the exception of some leisurely walks. That 12 week break turned into months and now it’s over two years since I’ve been away from my exercise routine.

As you know, bad habits are hard to break. My poor eating habits continued after my son was born and I’ve never gotten back into a steady exercise routine. Here in Saskatchewan it has been a long winter and the snow is still falling. My son and I are anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring so we can head back outside for walks, bike rides and playing in the park. It’s always so much easier to exercise while playing with your kids outdoors.

There are plenty of ways to stay fit indoors as well. Here are some fun ideas:

  • play some music and have a dance party
  • set out some items for an indoor obstacle course like plastic safety cones to run around and piles of pillows to climb over
  • play “Simon” says with exercises like jumping jacks and hopping on one foot

Not only have I been struggling with the exercise routine but I also need to work on my sweet tooth! After every meal I feel the need to have a small sweet treat of some type. I try not to keep treats in the house so that the temptation isn’t there but there is always a bag of chocolate chips or a toddler cookie in the house calling my name!

Special Fun Time with Kids & Giveaway

We all seem to be so busy with errands, chores, lessons, school, work and more so it’s easy to forget to set aside some time to have fun as a family. Fun time with kids doesn’t have to be extravagant to be special. Some crayons and a large roll of paper could be used to trace each other for portraits or a container of bubble mix could be turned into a fun racing game. My little guy is a monster when it comes to snacks and it seems like he’s always hungry. He’s not quite two years old yet so he’s not talking a lot but one thing that always gets a reaction out of him is the word “snack”. As soon as I say “Do you want a snack?” he says “Ya Ya” and runs to sit on the couch while I find him a treat. His favorite snacks are Bear Paws so I was so excited to hear that they have new flavours to try!

When my son was 12 months old, we were surprised to discover that he has a peanut allergy. There are no food allergies in either of our family histories so we were really surprised (and scared!) to see him have a reaction to peanut butter. Needless to say, I am so cautious when it comes to preparing and ordering food for him. I always bring along his own snacks to play dates and parties because I never want to take the chance of him being exposed to peanuts or tree nuts.

One thing that I love about Bear Paws is they have the “peanut free” symbol clearly marked on the outside of the box. For those of you who have a child with a food allergy, you know how stressful and time consuming it can be to read the food labels on every product before you prepare a snack or meal. Bear Paws is one snack that I can give him with the confidence of knowing that it’s safe for him to eat.

One of our favourite activities with our little guy is our bedtime routine of reading and snacks – and not just because it means bedtime is near and we’ll have a few quiet moments to relax! My little guy loves the Kids Play Area in Indigo and he always goes right for the train set. In the Kids Play Area, there is a great combination of both books and fun activity ideas. There are always so many great classic books to choose from along with some of the most popular characters from children’s movies and television programs. Did you know that Indigo also has a large selection of board games? They are like a one-stop shop for a family fun night!

LEGO DUPLO Promotion

Indigo is very family-friendly and they encourage families to share the love of reading. They have a fun schedule of in-store events like the story time and craft event that we stopped in at yesterday. During this 30-minute event, a sales associate reads a story with the kids and then leads them through a fun craft related to the book. The starting age group for this event 2 years old and my little guy isn’t quite there yet. We stopped by anyways to encourage him to participate but he had ants in his pants to get back to the Kids Play Area. We’ll certainly try again when he’s a little older. The kids that were participating in the event were having a great time listening to the story and making fun crafts to take home. Check your local store for a listing of event dates and times.

This month at Indigo, they are running a special promotion on LEGO DUPLO products. Until March 31st, all LEGO DUPLO products are 20% off. Yes, that includes toys and books!
