Party Tip Tuesday – Celebrations at Home

I am so excited to introduce you to Chris with Celebrations at Home. I came across her site a couple of months ago when searching tips for creating a beautiful dessert table – you can see her creative tutorial here – and I was amazed at all of her fabulous ideas! Not only will you find planning inspiration on the site but you’ll also find loads of tips in the Party Design Basics tutorial series. Today Chris will share some tips with us on setting the scene for a beautiful and memorable celebration.

Celebrations at Home

1) What is Celebrations at Home?

Celebrations At Home (CAH) is a blog all about stylish entertaining.  I like to think of it as a fusion between the classic text based “entertaining blog” and the heavily detailed “party blog,” with lots of photos and usable tips.  I’m extremely visual so if it’s not pretty to look at, I won’t stop and read.

CAH focuses on everyday get-togethers as well as the big celebrations in life.  Why wait for one day a year for gatherings when you can celebrate life, family, & friends every weekend?….And do it with style of course!  We share parties, recipes, easy DIY’s, and even sprinkle in ideas for home decor once in a while.

2) Do you have any tips on how to add a special WOW factor into your party?

It’s actually quite easy to add a wow factor to parties because most people (guests) simply aren’t used to seeing it.  As bloggers we get desensitized by all the details we see every day, but for the average hostess and her guests, it’s as simple as adding printed labels, a signature drink with a cute name and matching color, or adding ribbon bows to display pieces.

To go a step further, hang a fabric bunting, set the food up with an interesting presentation, and create a fabric backdrop as a focal point to a table or photo booth.

3) What are some of your favorite ways to take ordinary food and dress it up for a party buffet table?

Any time you can turn food into mini sizes it makes it more interesting.  It also makes it easier to handle and eat.  For instance, instead of serving one big cheese ball, roll the mixture into tiny individual sized versions like these.

Some of my tools of the trade for dressing up food are chocolate molds and ice molds, a piping bag with tips, different sizes and shapes of cookie cutters, and glass votive holders.

The chocolate molds make great toppers for cupcakes;  the ice molds can be filled with juice or berries to add flavor to drinks; piping bags can be used for more than icing cupcakes – you can use  them to pipe mashed potatoes into the glass votive holders for individual serving sizes; cookie cutters can cut cookies, biscuits, sandwiches, or fruit.  I share even more tips and photos for dressing up food, here.

4) What is the newest trend in dessert selections for parties? Is it still cake pops or is there something else that is becoming more popular?

I think cake pops have almost become a classic at this point.  Personally I like to make an easier version – brownie pops.  These are far less messy to make since you don’t need to mix in the frosting.  The moisture in the brownie holds itself together.

I’ve always enjoyed serving mini parfaits and I’m seeing these a lot more often now.  Anything that can be served in small glass containers has gotten very popular, from pies in jars to mousse shots.

Also, macaroons are still going strong!

5) What are some of your favorite DIY projects for party favors?

My favorite party favor that I’ve created was the tea bag cookie holder I made for a tea party.  What makes it so great is that it’s a themed favor so it blends into the party, it’s easy to do with items you find locally, and it’s totally unique.

There are so many packaging options now, from boxes, to bags, to tubes.  Fill any of these small containers with homemade or designer cookies, truffles, or other small candies and wrap it in a bow and printable tag.  When the favors are displayed all together, or at each place setting it will look like a million bucks.

Train Birthday Party Ideas

If your little one loves trains, then you’ll love these ideas for a train-themed party. These train birthday party ideas will help you Choo Choo choose everything from your invitations, decorations, food and activities through to your party favors. There is a lot of information to share so let’s get started!

Train Birthday Party Ideas

Train Birthday Party Ideas – Invitations:

Here are some cute phrases to use on your train-themed invitations:

  • the invitation could resemble a train ticket and could invite passengers on the {Child Name}’s Express
  • wording such as “Chugga Chugga Choo Choo! We’re having a party & we’re inviting you!”
  • wording such as “All Aboard! The party train is ready to board!”
  • wording such as “All available engines are required to report to the station for an important birthday message!”

Train Birthday Party Ideas – Decorations:

Does your little one have a train set? This makes a great piece of decor for the party plus doubles as a fun activity for the kids. Here are some addition decoration ideas:

  • use black construction paper to cut out train tracks to lead up your sidewalk into the party
  • use black electrical tape to make train tracks inside the house
  • each of the party guests could be given a bandana and train hat to wear
  • toy trains, wooden tracks and mini train traffic signs can be placed on the buffet table around the food
  • train crossing sign could be placed on the front door
  • create a banner of connecting trains that each have a letter on them (H-A-P-P-Y-B-I-R-T-H-D-A-Y)
  • turn old boxes into freight cars to hold the party food, favors, etc.
  • use rectangle baskets or dishes as freight cars to serve food in
  • label the box freight cars with {Child Name}’s Express
  • black paper fans could be secured to the bottom of the tablecloths to resemble train wheels

Train Birthday Party Ideas – Activities:

Working on the rails can be a challenging task! A fun activity for the kids is to put them through a train crew member training camp. This could include fun race assignments like:

  • loading the freight train (putting water balloons inside baskets as quickly and safely as possible)
  • directing the train (a 2-person team effort where one person talks to lead a blindfolded team member through an obstacle course)
  • building a train out of LEGO pieces and racing them down a track
  • A train tag game where one person is chosen as “it” and as he/she tags people, those people join onto the back of the “train” (hanging onto the waist of the person in front of them). The winner is the train’s caboose (the last person caught)!

Train Birthday Party Ideas – Food:

Your party buffet could include a menu board labeled as the “Chew Chew Cafe” and could serve food such as:

  • black licorice labeled as “Train Tracks”
  • brown bagged lunches (sandwiches, bags of chips, juice box)
  • mini round appetizers labeled as “Boulders”
  • barbeques vegetable kabobs labeled as “Steam Engine Vegetables”

Train Birthday Party Ideas – Favors:

The favor area could be labeled as “Cargo” and the favors could be placed in a box decorated to look like a freight train. One of my favorite ideas for a party favor is a wooden train whistle. The kids are sure to have a lot of fun with these! Some other cute favor ideas include:

  • train hat
  • train shaped cup
  • small train craft (like a paint-your-own wooden train)
  • train shaped cookies
  • small train toys
  • train stickers

Slumber Party Ideas

Do you remember having slumber parties when you were a child or teen? Did you watch scary movies? Indulge in delicious snacks? Play silly games of Truth or Dare? Here are some fun slumber party ideas that can be adjusted for any age group. I’ve created all of the printable party supplies for you to download for free here: Early Bird Printables and Night Owl Printables.

Slumber Party Ideas

Slumber Party Ideas – Evening:

Rather than give guests their favors at the end of the party, you can welcome guests to your slumber party by giving them a slumber party survival kit. This can include items such as:

  • fuzzy socks or slippers
  • sleep eye mask
  • personalized snack buckets
  • face mask treatments

Activity ideas for a slumber party include:

  • family-friendly Truth or Dare game (click here for a free printable)
  • spa face mask or foot treatments
  • make your own spa treatments (check out these fun ideas & printables by the talented Angie with Echoes of Laughter)
  • glow in the dark paint and mini canvases so they can create glowing masterpieces
  • watching scary movies
  • playing boardgames
  • giving each other makeovers

A big part of any slumber party is the food. Your delicious buffet table can include items with fun names such as:

  • Pillow Pizza Pockets
  • Mr. Sandman Dream Puffs (chocolate coated marshmallow cookies)
  • PaJAMa Cookies (jam cookies)
  • caffeine-free soda
  • Snug as a Bug tortilla wraps
  • Popcorn Buffet (with a variety of popcorn salts and candy mix-ins)

Slumber Party Ideas – Morning:

After a night full of food, games and giggles, invite your guests for a delicious morning slumber party buffet. Some tasty food ideas include:

  • mini muffins
  • mini boxes of cereal
  • a create-your-own fruit smoothie buffet
  • toppings for yogurt parfaits
  • mini cinnamon buns
  • Early Bird Worms (gummy worms)
  • fruit kabobs
  • pancakes, waffles or crepes with fruit
  • freshly squeezed juice

Slumber Party Ideas

Rather than ending your slumber party after breakfast, try to plan a fun morning walk or hike with the guests. You can pack each guest a little bag of energy-boosting trail mix and go for a walk in a local park or a hike just outside of the city. For a fun activity sure to cause more giggles, you could even make up your own fun yoga class in a park or an obstacle course in a nearby playground.

Homemade Party Favors

Trying to decide on a party favor can be a difficult task. There are so many ideas for goody bag fillers but what are some good ideas that will be put to use? For a fun craft idea for your kids, you can work with them to create homemade party favors to give to the party guests. It’s a great way to get your kids involved in the party planning process.

Homemade Party Favors

Homemade Party Favors:

  • small glass jar filled with homemade cookies and topped with a “Cookie Jar” personalized label
  • cake pops
  • cupcake bites (like cake pops but without the stick)
  • cookie dough truffles
  • mini flower pots decorated and personalized
  • chocolate pops using molds from your local craft store
  • homemade soaps, lotions, scrubs or lip gloss (check out these great ideas by Angie with Echoes of Laughter)
  • salty snack mix in a tin (here are a few recipe ideas)
  • dry cookie mix in a jar with baking directions
  • for a candy buffet, have your kids decorate the treat boxes
  • felt hand puppets
  • homemade jewelry like necklaces and bracelets
  • homemade bubble mix
  • melt crayons to make new color mixtures and use fun shaped silicone trays to make silly shapes
  • small canvas tote bags with iron-on monograms (check out Society Shirts for inexpensive personalized iron-ons)
  • personalized wrappers for chocolate bars
  • homemade play dough with cookie cutters and mini rolling pins
  • gummy candy kabobs
  • candy apples
  • chocolate dipped and candy coated pretzel rods
  • use cookie cutters to make fun shaped Rice Krispie treats then dip one side in chocolate and roll in sprinkles

In addition to homemade party favors, your kids can also make homemade thank you cards to mail out after the party.

Have you ever made homemade party favors? If so, what type of party favors did you make?

Princess & Knight Birthday Party

Hear ye, hear ye! You are invited to a royal celebration celebrating the princess & knight of the Royal Kingdom! Do you have twins (a boy and a girl) or children with birthdays close to each other? Have you ever planned a co-ed birthday party for them? These Princess & Knight birthday party ideas are perfect for a co-ed party. Here I’ll share ideas with you on invitations, decorations, food, activities, favors and more. All of the printables featured here are by the creative Holly with Mimi’s Dollhouse.

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

Princess & Knight Birthday Party – Invitations:

These adorable invitations incorporate both the birthday princess and the birthday knight. For a cute royal touch, seal the envelope with an embossed stamp. The mini printable circles (for Hershey’s kisses) can also be used as stickers on the outside of the invitation’s envelope.

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

Princess & Knight Birthday Party – Decorations:

This Welcome sign makes a great hanging for your front door. Simply punch a hole in both the top corners and loop a piece of tulle through it to hang. I used this for a party booth area of the party – I’ll share more about this in the activity section.

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

A personalized banner is always a cute addition above the buffet table. Ribbon or tulle can be used to string the banner together. This can be placed directly on the wall or can be pinned to a curtain backdrop (I used a silver shower curtain for this backdrop).

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

The large circle cutouts can be used to glue onto large pink, black or silver paper fans. It’s a quick and easy way to personalize a basic party supply!

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

Jeweled candle holders can be used to hold cake stands and serving trays. Can you guess what this table runner is? It’s an old bridesmaid dress! With a little bit of creative thinking, you’d be surprised at how many party supplies you already have in your home.

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

The printable cupcake circles can be used with a tulle ribbon to create custom napkin holders.

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

Princess & Knight Birthday Party – Food:

When planning food for a party, I always start by brainstorming words that remind me of that particular theme. For example, when I think of princesses I think of tiaras, a royal ball, flowers, etc. With this in mind, I decided on a simple chicken ball appetizer labeled “Royal Ball” and a vegetable & dip platter labeled “Garden Dip”.

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

When thinking of a knight, I think of fire-breathing dragons, suit of armor, swords, etc. so I decided to include a salsa labeled “Fire-Breathing Salsa” and fruit kabobs labeled as “Sword Fruit”. The printable food tent cards let you create your own special names for the party food.

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

Bite-sized desserts are always a hit at a party. Since they are small, you can try more of a variety! Some ideas for small desserts include:

  • mini cupcakes
  • cream puffs
  • tiara-shaped cookies
  • mini brownies topped with pink icing and silver sprinkles
  • cake pops

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

Princess & Knight Birthday Party – Drinks:

Water bottle labels can be used to dress up bottles of water or pop. Cupcake circles and straw flags can be used to dress up plain plastic cups (straw flags can also be used like a ribbon around the cup). The straw flags make a cute addition to black and pink striped straws.

Princess & Knight Birthday Party – Activities:

Photo booths are always a fun idea at a party and the photos make a great addition to the thank you cards that you’ll send after the party. For this photo booth, I used a silver shower curtain backdrop, the welcome sign, paper fans dressed up with the printable circles and the mini banners with the birthday girl and birthday boy names.

Princess & Knights Birthday Party

Other fun ideas for Princess & Knight birthday party activities include:

  • a “training camp” for the knights including an obstacle course
  • a “princess school” teaching the little girls proper tea party etiquette
  • a scavenger hunt with the princesses playing against the knights to find a hidden treasure
  • a craft of decorating your own crown
  • a craft of decorating your own sheild

Princess & Knight Birthday Party – Favors:

The mini printable circles make a cute addition to Hershey’s kisses or pink salt water taffy. Other cute Princess & Knight birthday party favor ideas include:

  • inflatable or foam swords
  • tiaras and wands
  • plastic drinking goblets
  • stickers or temporary tattoos

Party Tip Tuesday with Bird’s Party

Last week I discovered Bird’s Party and I was amazed! Amazed at all of the creative ideas and surprised that I hadn’t come across this creative site sooner! I highly recommend browsing the Bird’s Party Magazine – I won’t tell you how much time I spent looking through all of the creative ideas last week. If you’ve already read the post on my son’s 2nd birthday party, you’ll see that I used a few of the Bird’s Party supplies in his party (like the adorable stick horses). Today she is here to share some creative party ideas with us – she makes party planning look so easy!

Bird's Party

1) What is Bird’s Party?

Bird’s Party is your destination for all things party!

Our online store is your one-stop-shop for all affordable, printable party supplies and decorations - You simply print, cut and party!

From DIY Birthdays, to Holidays, Baby Showers, Special Celebrations and more – we have unique, stunning but above all, AFFORDABLE party printable and designs to help you craft amazing parties and style for all of life’s special events and celebrations!

Bird’s Party Blog and Magazine is where you can get inspired, and see real parties styled using our printables, recipes, DIY party crafts (like these beautiful DIY Spring Flower Pomanders), FREE printables and all you need to celebrate in style without breaking the bank!

Bird's Party

2) What are your favorite tips for dressing up some standard birthday party supplies?

{I love the ideas of propellers on straws for an aviation party & butterflies on paper lanterns!} The propellers and butterflies are actually part of our printable designs!

Printables offer are a unique and affordable way to jazz the simplest of tableware – be it fancy china or disposable goods. So use them! With a little creativity and know-how you can create beautiful parties with printable for any celebration or season without having to be a crafts expert, nor spend a fortune!

I am a huge fan of handmade or homemade, and that goes for the food as well as decor. BUT you do not have to be a master baker either. Store-bought cakes, desserts and drinks can be embellished with printable decor, assorted candy and fondant decorations to make them stand out!

Bird's Party

3) What are some of the most original ideas you’ve seen for a party backdrop?

One of our most popular posts on the blog concerns an Anthropologie inspired backdrop.  But anything from a poster board, painter’s canvas to paper fans and lanterns can be used. I have even used shower curtains and duvet covers!

Check out our Pinterest board here for more fab ideas.

Bird's Party

4) What suggestions do you have for cute ways to decorate place settings for kids at parties?

Printables are my number one choice for party and table decor. But also try use what you have at home, re-purpose items to create a fun and engaging table. Make the table interesting for the kids with games and activities like coloring placemats, chalkboard tablecloths, cootie-catchers etc.

No point having expensive tableware or precious linen that may get ruined, so again for disposable tableware, but beautifully styled with the help of some unique printables!

Bird's Party

5) What has been the most original party favor you’ve seen for a child’s birthday?

I love giving favors that the kids helped to make. Not only it also doubles as a party activity, but kids are more likely to treasure the item for longer.

So whether you’re sending little guests home with a cookie they’ve decorated at the party, or a handmade puppet or treasure box, make sure they got involved in making or embellishing the item – Much more fun and frugal too!
